Oil Tank Emergency or Oil Spill? Call 028 9131 4041 for a 24/7 response
The Oil Tank Doc fits new oil tanks across Northern Ireland but we have been asked on occassion can we fit a second hand oil tank. We tend to fit new oil tanks mostly for the following reasons. However in certain situations we can fit good quality second hand oil tanks. We estimate over 90% of customers fit a new oil tank.
Warranty - all new oil tanks come with a long manufacturers warranty that covers defects and ensures you are protected in the unlikely event that a fault develops with your new oil tank. A second hand oil tank comes with no warranty and usually offers no backup if a fault develops. In most instances you will be liable for repair/replacement/spillage costs. This does not happen often, but it is important to be aware of.
Lifespan - it makes sense that a new tank will last longer than a second hand tank. This is due to the fact that over time the oil tank plastic will age due to UV sunlight damage and become suspectible to weakening and bulging. New tanks also tend to be built with more refined production processes and better weight distribution designs allowing the tank to last longer. Lastly, when a new oil tank is installed we always check the base to make sure it is level to ensure the weight of the oil is evenly distributed on a new level base.
Compliance with OFTEC regulations - standards for oil tanks have changed over the last 10-15 years and this will be the age range of the vast majority of second hand oil tanks. These include the use of a double skin bunded tank where a single skin may no longer be acceptable, fire safety risks, and environmental standards. We will be able to advise on any possible hazards via an oil tank inspection.
Summary: when we consider the following we can see that in the vast majority of cases, the benefits of a new tank outweigh the benefits of installing a second hand oil tank. Pricing will be more expensive for a new tank but this is to be expected and there are many benefits to paying for a new tank. However this does not mean that a second hand oil tank cannot be considered in certain limited circumstances.
We occassionally have a supply of excellent second hand oil tanks that we fit for customers on a budget and in limited circumstances. However we recommend having a chat with us and arranging an oil tank inspection.
On the day of installation we will arrive with your new oil tank and all the materials to complete the job.
Once on site we will review the current situation and proceed to use a special pump to transfer your oil into a transfer tank.
We will only transfer the clean oil, ensuring any sludge or water is not put into the new tank, contaminating the supply.
We will then de-commission your old tank and dispose of it safely.
We will inspect the site of your old tank and determine if a new concrete base is required.
We will then site the new tank with new fittings and filters, transferring all of the oil from the transfer tank.
We will then ensure your oil boiler is bled off air and your heating system is running smoothly.
