Do you have a defunct underground fuel tank that needs to be removed in Northern Ireland?
At The Oil Tank Doc, we are specialists in commercial and residential fuel tank decommissioning and removal, and our team can safely and efficiently remove or decommission your underground fuel tank with minimal disruption to your site anywhere in Northern Ireland or Ireland.
Decommissioning an old underground fuel tank that contains highly volatile and flammable liquids like petrol, oil, or diesel tank is a demanding, involved process, making an experienced and capable team essential. Our OFTEC trained staff specialise in decommissioning both residential and commercial tanks, including tanks installed in busy commercial and industrial sites. We have in house civil engineers who can sign off decommissioning these tanks, and are fully licensed, and insured ensuring your property is in safe and experienced hands.
We offer a range of decommissioning services, from filling your defunct oil tank with concrete or RG22 foam to completely removing the tank from your site. If you’d like to decommission an old fuel tank to replace it with a newer one, we also offer a complete decommissioning service.
In addition to underground tanks, we can also decommission and/or remove fuel tanks installed above ground.
2x Underground Petrol Tank Decommissioning at Private Home (formerly a petrol station)
The Oil Tank Doc team responsed to a property that had previously been a petrol station with 2x underground petrol tanks that were never decommissioned or removed.
Contracts had been exchanged during the sale of this property, however the 2x underground fuel tanks were not lender friendly.
The customer contacted The Oil Tank Doc team to attend to the property and carry out an inspection. We identified 2x large underground petrol tanks that had a capacity of 7000 litres each. We tested the liquid that remained and identified both to hold a quantity of petrol.
We used our excavator to remove concrete and tarmac allowing us to visualise the body of the tanks.
We then cut into the tanks and filled them with concrete. Taking photos and videos of our work, we produced a detailed report signed off by our in house civil engineer confirming decommissioning of these two old underground petrol tanks had been completed and they were rendered inert.
We achieved this within one week.
Project Turnaround Time: 1 week from instruction of works

A regular inspection of your oil tank and heating system by an OFTEC Trained Oil Heating Engineer reduces the risk of an oil tank leak
We recommend planning an oil tank replacement and changing your oil tank when it is still sound with no leaks - most of the time however we replace oil tanks that have already started leaking! It is best to avoid this if possible.
