Bunded Double-Skin Oil Tank Replacements across Northern Ireland by The Oil Tank Doc
Older domestic oil tanks can be single skin design. Government regulations require a bunded (double skinned) oil tank if you store more than 2500 litres of oil, if you store fuel in a commercial setting, or if the location of your oil tank is:
Within 10 metres of controlled watercourse such as stream, river etc..
Located where a spillage could run into an open drain or loose fitting manhole cover.
Within 50 metres of a bore hole or spring.
Where the vent pipe is not visible from the fill point. (IE. Extended fill points)
Any other Potential hazards individual to the site.
A tank must be sited 760mm away from a non-fire rated boundary such as a wooden boundary fence. If this isn’t possible, contact us so we can advise on fire barrier protection details in the official OFTEC regulations. We always find a way to install your new oil tank as every property is different.

Summary: in most cases in Northern Ireland, a new single skin oil tank is acceptable. A new single skin oil tank will be an upgrade to your old oil tank regardless. However if you are near a stream, want additional security, store fuel in a commercial setting and or want more than 2500 litres of oil, a bunded oil tank will be required. We fit Kingspan bunded oil tanks. They are twice the tank, but twice the price.
A double skin oil tank, also called a bunded oil tank, is a tank within a tank, with an inner tank holding the oil and an outer protective tank designed to catch any leaks or spills from the inner tank, preventing environmental pollution. The outer tank, or "bund," holds at least 110% of the inner tank's capacity, providing a crucial safety feature for storing heating oil.
How it works
Inner Tank: This is the primary tank that stores the heating oil.
Outer Tank (Bund): This is a secondary, larger tank that completely surrounds the inner tank.
Containment: If the inner tank develops a leak or splits, the oil will be contained within the bund, providing a secondary layer of protection.
Key Benefits
Environmental Protection: Significantly reduces the risk of oil spills contaminating soil and water.
Enhanced Safety: Prevents leaks from the inner tank and contains them within the bund.
Durability: The outer skin protects the inner tank from the elements and external damage.
Regulations: In many areas, bunded tanks are a legal requirement for storing oil over a certain capacity.
Security: The double-layer design can offer added security against theft or tampering.
Why choose one?
A double skin oil tank provides superior protection and peace of mind compared to a single-skinned tank, making it a safer and more environmentally responsible choice for oil storage.
New Bunded Oil Tank Replacement in Fermanagh
We were in Carrybridge, Fermanagh today replacing a old Titan tank as can be seen in the video. We fitted a new Kingspan slimline bunded oil tank.
On the day of installation we will arrive with your new oil tank and all the materials to complete the job.
Once on site we will review the current situation and proceed to use a special pump to transfer your oil into a transfer tank.
We will only transfer the clean oil, ensuring any sludge or water is not put into the new tank, contaminating the supply.
We will then de-commission your old tank and dispose of it safely.
We will inspect the site of your old tank and determine if a new concrete base is required.
We will then site the new tank with new fittings and filters, transferring all of the oil from the transfer tank.
We will then ensure your oil boiler is bled off air and your heating system is running smoothly.
