What we do
Step 1: Contain or Halt the Oil Leak
After identifying a heating oil spill, the first step is to prevent the oil from spreading into the environment and, if possible, stop further oil loss from the storage tank.
If you observe oil soaked into the ground or visible oil on the surface, you can temporarily contain it by using absorbent materials such as cat litter, earth, or sand. These materials create a barrier around the spill, reducing the risk of further spreading. They can also be used to absorb any visible oil.
If cracks or splits are visible on the oil storage tank, try plugging them temporarily using a bar of soap to halt the oil flow until the tank can be emptied. It is crucial to avoid getting any heating oil on your skin or clothing, as it can be hazardous. If contact occurs, wash it off promptly.
If the source of the oil leak is not obvious or if it originated from valves or pipework, the flow of oil from the tank should be shut off.
Step 2: Report the Oil Spill
We are able to offer our expertise in managing any oil leak from this point onwards.
